6 Scary Facts about Bad Credit Scores

6 Scary Facts about Bad Credit Scores 6 Scary Facts about Bad Credit Scores 6 Scary Facts about Bad Credit ScoresIf you need some motivation to start fixing a lousy credit score, then these six terrifying facts should help scare you into action. When you need to feed your family but there’s not enough money in the bank account to cover it, it may not seem like you have much of a choice but to run up credit cards or skip other bill payments, like on your utilities or maybe your car loan.In the long term, however, actions like these can damage your credit score, which means the next time you need a line of credit, you may have to pay higher interest rates. And if your score gets really low, you may only be eligible for bad credit loans or predatory payday loans and cash advances that can threaten your already fragile finances.Bad credit is a huge problem in this country, where only 40 percent of us have at least $1,000 in the bank to cover emergency expenses. Let’s take a look at six other scary facts about bad credit scores.1. 34.8 percent of Americans wit h credit have bad credit.According to a recent report by one of the top three credit bureaus in the country, nearly 35 percent of Americans with credit have what’s called “subprime credit,” or a FICO credit score between 580 and 669. In fact, the national credit score average is 701. (A “very good” score is between 740 and 799.)Since your credit score is the primary tool lenders use to measure how risky it would be to loan you money, having subprime credit means you may end up paying much higher rates in order to borrow money. In some cases, you may not qualify for the product you want at all.2. 26 million Americans don’t have any credit at all.A recent Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) report found that about one in 10 Americans don’t have any credit history with a national credit bureauâ€"or at least not enough credit history to produce a credit score. This is what is called being “credit invisible.”Certain communities are at a higher risk for being cre dit invisible, including black and Hispanic consumers (15 percent credit invisible), as well as those who live in low-income areas (30 percent credit invisible). It can be very difficult for those with no credit to qualify for financial products like credit cards and installment loans. They may also have trouble getting a cell phone contract or an apartment.3. About 12 million Americans use no credit check loans each year.According to a study by the Pew Charitable Trusts, about 12 million Americans took out at least one payday loanâ€"a predatory form of a no credit check loanâ€"in 2010. An average borrower actually took out eight payday loans, each with an average principal of $375.Due to payday loans having such short terms and high interest, many borrowers have to take out multiple loans simply to pay down the debt owed on the first loan. Because these storefront and  online loans  do not require credit checksâ€"hence the umbrella term “no credit check loan”â€"vulnerable popula tions with poor credit or credit invisibility are frequently the target of predatory lenders.4. The national average interest rate on a payday loan is 400 percent.Recent reports have shown that payday loans in the United States come with an average annual percentage rate (APR) of 400 percent and can be as high as 700 percent!APRs reflect that total cost (interest and fees) of a loan per year, so it is a good way to compare the cost of different financial productions.   Compare those payday loan APRs to your average credit card or personal loan and you will see rates that  are twenty times higher  on the low end.And if you think a secured title loan might be a better optionâ€"think again. The average annual interest rate for those no credit check loans is 300 percent. Plus, according to a study from the CFPB, one in five title loan sequences ends with the borrowers vehicle being repossessed.5. A bad credit score can prevent you from getting a job. That’s right. It’s not just loan and apartment applications that can be affected by bad credit. Unless you live in one of the few states that have regulated the practice, employers canâ€"and doâ€"run your credit as part of the application process.According to one report, which surveyed low- and middle-income households, one in four participants said that potential employers asked to run their credit, and one in 10 respondents had been informed that they would not be hired based on credit report findings. Of those, 70 percent were rejected on the basis of their credit score.A survey of human resources professionalsâ€"the people who help make hiring decisions for companiesâ€"found that 25 percent of participants checked credit for some positions while 6 percent checked for all positions.6. Bad credit may be the result of errors. The three major credit bureausâ€"the companies that calculate your credit scoreâ€"are not perfect and sometimes they even make mistakes that can negatively impact your credit score. In fact, a new study of CFPB consumer complaint data showed that 43 percent of all complaints made in 2018 were related to credit reporting, and 61 percent of those complaints were specifically about credit reporting mistakes.Credit reporting mistakes can be disputed, but according to the report, it’s not common for the credit bureaus themselves to resolve issues with customers. To check your credit report for errors, simply request a free copy of your report by visiting AnnualCreditReport.com. You are legally entitled to one free credit report from each of the three primary credit bureaus every year upon request.Bad credit is scary, but fixing your score might actually be easier than you think. Garvey s Theory Of Economic And Political Reformation

Garvey s considered capitalism to be necessary in the process of human advancement but expressed difficulty with the results of its unrestrained uses. It was Garvey s belief that white capitalists tolerated African American workers only because they were willing to accept a lower standard of wage than unionized white workers. Garvey aimed to reform the social democratic nature rather than attempting to eradicate the capitalist system. He felt that the capitalistic system gave African Americans a chance for competitive employment and also gave them the opportunity to make a profit from their labor. Garvey also felt that communism was a white man s creation to solve their own political and economic problems. To him, it was never intended for the economic or political emancipation of African Americans, but rather to raise the earning capacity of the lower class workers. Garvey said, It is a dangerous theory of economic and political reformation because it seeks to put government in the hands of an ignorant white mass who have not been able to destroy their natural prejudices towards Negroes and other non-white people. While it may be a good thing for them, it will be a bad thing for the Negroes who will fall under the government of the most ignorant, prejudiced class of the white race (Nolan, 1951). Garvey s plan involved letting the communists fight their own battles. In Descartes Third Meditation, he tries desperately to...

In Descartes Third Meditation, he tries desperately to prove that god exists; he does so by clearing all thoughts because they potentially could be false. He uses the fact that God thinks in order to prove his existence. In the third meditation he presents two arguments for the proof of his existence. I believe that these arguments contain many flaws. In the third mediation, Descartes moves forward in the establishment of the idea of certainty. He decides that the truths he earlier discovered in meditation two have a common element of being distinct and clear. He then states, â€Å"I now seem able to posit as a general rule that everything I very clearly and distinctly perceived is true (Descartes 19). He now realizes that things he†¦show more content†¦Descartes believes that god is, â€Å"a substance that is infinite, independent, supremely intelligent, supremely powerful†(Descartes, Pg. 31). Therefore the only way these ideas could have made it into his mind is i f God planted them there. Thus concluding that God must exist. It is clear that as his arguments progress there becomes a great deal of weakness. He makes the claim that he cannot possibly perceive any element that he himself does not possess. But, he states that he can perceive sizes and shapes, yet as a thing that thinks, how could he perceive these things without having shape or size? With this being said, why does he not rule out the existence of God from the very beginning? Since it is not likely that Descartes contains the all knowing and powerful traits that God does, how could he understand the elements of a perfect being? It does not make sense to me that if Descartes is not perfect, he should not be able to know the idea of a perfect being. For him to comprehend this perfect being, god would have had to plant it there. This argument becomes very confusing because if Descartes could conclude that he is not perfect he should be able to imagine a being who is almost opposite of him. He could then develop the idea of a perfect being; this cannot be used as proof of God, because Descartes could imagine a perfect being, without one existing. AnotherShow MoreRelatedDescartes Vs. The novel, The House on Mango Street is filled with race and gender discrimination. In the novel strangers come into Esperanza’s neighborhood and discriminate Esperanza and her neighbors. Also because Esperanza is a girl, she is not treated equally as the boys and must follow the traditional gender roles for females. Race and gender come into conflict when Esperanza is unable to interact with boys and people discriminate her neighborhood . Esperanza and her neighborhood are constantly racially discriminated against by people coming into her neighborhood. In the book Esperanza states, â€Å"Those who don’t know any better come into our neighborhood scared, think we’re dangerous†(8). This quote proves how people think of Esperanza and her neighborhood as being â€Å"dangerous† and â€Å"scary† just because a majority of the residents living there are hispanic, and the area is not in good shape. People come into Esperanza’s neighborhood and judge the neighborhood before getting to know the people living there first and these people are basically judging the people in her neighborhood just because of their race. We will write a custom essay sample on Racial and gender Discrimination or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Esperanza has been a victim of having to conform to traditional female gender roles and gender discrimination numerous times in the novel. It proves how boys and girls are treated differently, and they must follow these traditional roles and it makes it seem as if they are living in different worlds. This is not fair because they are being treated differently just because of their genders which is something that they can not choose themselves. Esperanza refuses to follow these traditional roles. When Esperanza states â€Å" but I have decided not to grow up tame like the others.. †(88) and â€Å"I am the one who leaves the table like a man, without putting back the chair or picking up the plate†(89). Wordsworth and Keats free essay sample

____ Wordsworth and Keats both belongs to Romantic age and both are the shining stars on the horizons of poetry. Both mark their names in the history of English literature through their work. ___John Keats and William Wordsworth believe in the depth of the world and the possibilities of the human heart. Regardless of where each poet looks for their inspiration they both are looking for the same thing; timeless innocence. Both poets sought to transcend time by creating works that dealt with life, death, hope and imagination and to discover some kind of deep truth or meaning in existence. Life and death is an issue that we will all have to deal with at some point in our lives and like all Romantics they sought to give it meaning. ____Both writers, William Wordsworth and John Keats express a fascination and longing toward eternity and immortality. ____Two of these poets, John Keats and William Wordsworth, employ these themes in their most prominent poetic works; love, nature, poetry, oneness, beauty, lover, world, life and some others. We will write a custom essay sample on Wordsworth and Keats or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page ____ Keats and Wordsworth both focus quite intensely on the connection between memory and the natural world, and they utilize some of their most memorable lines to describe the remembrance of nature that is present in the scene they each create. ____ Both great poets seem to recognize the finite nature of beauty, but they approach this recognition from different angles: Wordsworth uses personal memory, while Keats employs an examination of mortality. ____ Keats and Wordsworth felt a strong connection between themselves and nature. Because of the dissimilitude of the natural and industrialized world, they expressed a yearning to commune with and belong in a provincial setting. However, each held his own belief regarding the philosophy behind the idea. ____ Wordsworth and Keats believed that beauty was expressed through nature, they shared in the assumption that the imagination is a superior force. However, their views on the characteristics and definitions of creative perception differed greatly, but both consider it and search it. ____ Both the legends, hold certain similarities in their imaginative opinions, and also a likeness in their expressions of symbolism, imagery, and thematic elements. For example, Balslev believes that in regard to Keats’s â€Å"Hyperion† and  Wordsworth’s â€Å"The Excursion†, â€Å"we have in either passage a character apprehending the god of song† . Balslev also writes that, in the exclusion of Keats’s enhancement of beauty, â€Å"We have a situation, a vocabulary, and a tone that are greatly similar† ____When we compare their poetry through central symbols, there is little similarity between Keats and Wordsworth†. According to Balslev, nature is the one symbol synonymous with almost every poem Wordsworth composed. He writes as though both people and landscape are â€Å"blurred†, united as a whole and expressed through a muddled and sometimes indefinite meaning. Although Keats oftentimes relays strong symbolism in regards to nature, â€Å"the central symbol is sharply defined, often with statuesque effect, the supporting images are certainly given in terms of each other, but the o bject is to intensify while extending associations in all possible directions† Now we will discuss the differences between the both Romantic poets: Wordsworth and Keats ____ Wordsworths style is apparently simple, and expressive of genuine and sincere feeling. He has used the language of humble and rustic life purified of coarseness and oddities. According to him the language of poetry should be the real language of men. It should not have any artificiality about it. By men, Wordsworth meant the rustic folk and humble people. He used a selection of language that common men understood. As compare to Keats who uses incredibly sensual language to illustrate how he is feeling and what he is imagining which gives the odes a sensual feeling of being alive. In Keats Ode to Autumn he is using a large amount of sensual language to try and take us to the place in his mind, his choice of words are hugely important for making Autumn a sensual Ode. Wordsworth’s vocabulary†¦ is predominately abstract, in contradistinction to that of Keats, which is largely concre te. ____The alliteration, assonance, consonance, and rhyme in Wordsworth’s poems were not immediately noticeable, and thus were not important elements overall in their contribution to the speaker’s intended meaning. For example, these lines, â€Å"But oft, in lonely rooms, and ‘mid the din Of towns and cities, I have owed to them,† While Keats’ usage of sounds was more effective than Wordsworth, even with a  limited number of alliterations and assonances. In this line, â€Å"And feed deep, deep upon her peerless eyes† The reader can easily spot this repetition of the â€Å"ee† sound. ____ Beauty is central in Keats poetry. There are two different points of beauty according to Keats 1. Physical beauty that is temporary (beauty of woman, of a painting) 2. Spiritual beauty that is the beauty of love, art friendship and it is eternal. This kind of beauty represented for him a source of consolation (so it is something like a moral value). As he said that â€Å"A thing of beauty is a joy forever: its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness.† While Wordsworth feels beauty in everything within nature, He does not need a profound image to praise it but the nature itself as he believed to merge with nature and be united with it. As he said that â€Å"The human mind is capable of excitement without the application of gross and violent stimulants; and he must have a very faint perception of its beauty and dignity who does not know this† and â€Å"Be mild, and cleave to gentle things, thy glory and thy happiness be there.† ____ Keats saw nature as a form of beauty as he said Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.† Wordsworth’s attitude to Nature can be clearly differentiated from that of the other great poets of Nature. He did not prefer the wild and stormy aspects of Nature like Byron, or the shifting and changeful aspects of Nature and the scenery of the sea and sky like Shelley. He did not recognize the ugly side of Nature ‘red in tooth and claw’ as Tennyson did. Wordsworth stressed upon the moral influence of Nature and the need of man’s spiritual discourse with her. â€Å"Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your teacher.† ____ According to Wordsworth the poet must greater sensibility and the ability to penetrate to the heart of things. As he said â€Å"Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.† while Keats believes that imagination should come before all and is superior to the tangible exterior of the physical world. As a great poet the sense of Beauty overcomes every other consideration, or rather obliterates all considerations. ____ Keat’s wrote exquisite love letters, pouring out his heart in epistles as beautiful as his poetry. I have had a thousand kisses, for which with my whole soul I thank love, he wrote in one, but if you should deny me the thousand and first t would put me to the proof how great a misery I could live through. Here we have not seen any specific kind of love letters to a female lover but Wordsworth loved to portrait villagers, simple girls as they are maiden and create an image that is loveable and pure. ____Wordsworth seen the things as a whole and tried to find out reasons to unite with the nature as compare to Keats was highly-subjective poet, his work depicts his inner personality. His pessimism is not destructive, although his melancholy lingers on throughout his poetry. The Public a thing I cannot help looking upon as an enemy, and which I cannot address without feelings of hostility. ______ Keats was extremely pessimist in his spontaneous flow of thoughts. His Brother Tom’s death disturbed him a lot. He wrote in one of his letters: â€Å"I have never known any unalloyed happiness for many days together; the death or sickness of someone has always spoilt my h ours.† Wordsworth was not a pessimist but a philanthropist. _____Images in a poem serve to help the reader bring the words to reality, or recall memories based on the reader’s experiences. Again, in Wordsworth’s â€Å"Lines,† his images are subtle, yet it is indicative of the simple, unobtrusive ways of nature, and interestingly, he has images for each of the five senses. The sense in this line, â€Å"These waters, rolling from their mountain-springs With a soft inland murmur† Refers to the sense of audition, or hearing. On the other hand, Keats’ images were explicit but did not tune to our senses so much as Wordsworth’s technique. The images he used to depict nature did not have the peacefulness that Wordsworth intended; rather, they were used to inhibit humans from negative feelings. â€Å"Can burst Joy’s grape against his palate fine† and â€Å"Nor suffer thy pale forehead to be kissed†   are examples of his sensory images. _____ Wordsworth’s poems are use to an explicit metaphor. â€Å"Their colors and their forms, were then to me   An appetite; a feeling and a love†.  Wordsworth compares the forms and colors of the mountains and the forests to an â€Å"appetite, a feeling, and a love.†Ã‚  Keats has an advantage over Wordsworth in this respect, because in addition to metaphors and personification, he includes allusions. Though both Wordsworth and Keats strongly influenced the archetypical composition of their age, they hailed from entirely different backgrounds and thus expressed their beliefs contrastingly. Each formed unique and yet occasionally similar viewpoints in regard to their opinions of nature, their expressions of the value of imagination, and their utilization of symbolism, metaphors, and themes.

White Tale Deer essays

White Tale Deer essays Whitetail Deer can be found all over North America. Deer have the ability to adapt to almost any habitat, making them one of the most overpopulated animals in many parts of the United States. Recently deer have received more attention the normal. This is due to the fact that they are one of the most unpredictable animals in the world. Until recently their behaviors were unknown. The population of deer across America has been growing at tremendous rates, making the species easier to observe. Many people assume hunters are the only ones interested. Farmers and everyday people are affected by the exponential growth of the white tail deer. Crops are diminishing at huge rates. In areas of overpopulation, deer can cause an over browsing effect which can destroy most plant species up to six feet. People are being killed by deer related car accidents on a regular basis. These are some things that can possibly be avoided if the public was more informed on the behaviors of deer. The male deer is called a buck and the female deer is called a doe. There are some very distinct differences in their appearances that are good to know. The male buck has what are called antlers. Hunters refer to them as the rack. The bucks will shed its antlers each year and just before fall they will return or grow back. The antlers consist of bone and grow out of the top of the head. Does are relatively smaller in size and usually are seen leading a herd of dear. This is why many hunters will wait after they see a doe hoping that the male buck will follow. Hunting season starts when mating season begins, this is why the buck will usually follow the doe. Bucks can grow to be between 200 and 300 pounds and can grow enormous antlers. During mating season the bucks are very aggressive and can be very territorial. They mark their area by what is called scrubs. They stand on there hind legs and reach as high as they can to scrub the tree. It leaves t...

Relationship Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Relationship - Essay Example Knapp Staircase model classifies and describes the dynamics of, how a new relationship proceeds and how it develops. The model is based on two major parts: Stages of Togetherness Initiating Experimenting Intensifying Integrating Bonding Coming Apart Differentiating Circumscribing Stagnating Avoiding Terminating I met my ex-partner in a family gathering. We both were pushed and motivated by our relatives to put our best impression on one another. She initiated the talk and I approved the sensible approach she had; for most of the things we converse about. Her tense shoulders and a nervous smile assured me that she is also trying hard to make a good impression on me. We dated again to know more, and experimented how we felt about each other. There were differences in our understanding and life style, but we both felt inclined to take it to the next level. Her expression of love was not customary; she liked to enquire for expression of love in return, since I am an introvert person this task was difficult to perform. Though, with time I tried via my actions to assure her of her significance in my life. In intensifying stage, I gave my support, submission, and love though not much verbally; but I proved it by changing my preferences according to her priorities. With the passage of few months, I believe we felt one. Since our relationship was known to all. Therefore, we moved in social gathering as a committed couple. I liked to be known from her reference and relied on her approval more than ever. We used to hang out more and I was not hesitant to show my affection and her significance in my life. In integrating stage, we compromised on the shortcomings and enjoyed our time together. We both wanted a legal relationship and wanted approval from our families to make it a real one. Hence, we declared our engagement and things became very certain for both of us. Our bonding was strong and we both wanted to continue it till the rest of our lives. She planned and decided all the necessary rituals which needed to be performed for the wedding. Although, I am not much of a social wedding person; but I wanted to proceed with her plan because it was pleasing and exciting for her. This is how bonding process becomes more evident and firm when one cares and the other realizes the invested efforts of the partner. Now the next phase of the Knapp’s staircase relationship model entails differentiating, in this stage we both started highlighting the pessimistic personality effects we had. I did not like the interference of her sister’s boyfriend, Jack and her submission to him, and she wanted him to be in all the significant decisions related to our marriage or life. She used to discuss important aspects of our life with him and used to act on his advices or suggestions. This habit of hers annoyed me a lot. Similarly, she disliked my habit of becoming a decision maker in our life. She liked to take decision on her own and when I used to inquire a bout any important aspect, she immediately wanted me to quit the discussion. Later on, we started avoiding conversation on disputable matters. I did not inquire, why did she leave all of a sudden for a trip with her friends, neither she explained me anything. She simply told me she was leaving with her friends as it would be her last trip as a single girl, so I did not comment on the already taken decision. The

Gender Representation in the Media

Gender Representation in the Media A comparison of representation between genders and how different genders are portrayed in childrens media Introduction I have chosen this EPQ topic because I wanted to address possible issues in the world we live in today. Its no secret that in society sexism, under representation and/or bad representation of both genders run wild and the issues greatly affect males and females. Representation is the description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way, whether that be good or bad. This essay will explore the differences and similarities of the way males and females are portrayed in childrens media, and even dig deeper into the intersectional theory which is the view that people experience oppression in varying configurations and in varying degrees of intensity, for example, that be the fact they are a member of the LGBT community or a POC (Person of colour). For this essay, I define childrens media as: Television Shows (Animation and Sitcoms) and Films. Originally, I included childrens literature as one of the areas I would analyse but I decided against this idea as I felt I was working with too much and I wouldnt be able to complete my project on time. I knew that focusing on too many things wouldnt allow me to work to my full ability and on the other hand, its a lot easier to watch something than it is to read something and fully comprehend it. I have many films and shows that I have used to base my research, for example I have taken a selection of the most popular shows (based on opinions from online critics and some factual evidence also) from the Networks dedicated to the ages of 8-16 so CN (Cartoon Network) and its sister channels affiliated with it and Disney, along with their related channels. Some of these programs include the popular programs like Steven Universe, Gravity Falls and Spongebob Squarepants. Its no use just watching these shows of course, I aim to make detailed notes showing the percentages of male and female character appearances in episodes, how certain genders and minorities are portrayed and to debate the question of which gender really receives the best and most realistic representation. For example, some questions I have asked myself during my research include, are there any obvious stereotypes that stand out to you and how do they make you feel? By doing this I believe I can form a solid opinion on the shows I have watched. However, its important that my opinions are not one sided so I aim to really argue with myself over the issues and weigh up the positives and the negatives in my conclusion. Furthermore, I wanted to discover how other people felt about gender representation in childrens media also. It would allow me to see if people really thought there was an issue and to try and understand those who believed that what their children were watching on television was okay. I have used questionnaires to gather opinions from both parents and children in hope that they will allow me to generalise the opinions further. Television: Cartoon Network Starting with Turners Cartoon Network I have chosen two programs from the channel, Johnny Bravo and Steven Universe. Johnny Bravo Starting with Johnny Bravo; it premiered on July 14, 1997, making it the earliest show on the Cartoon Network list, and the first season completed production in December of that year. [1]The series stars a muscular young man named Johnny Bravo who dons a pompadour hairstyle and an Elvis Presley-like voice. He has a forward, woman-chasing personality and the plots typically revolve around him trying to get a woman that he has targeted throughout the episode to fall in love with him. He is often beaten up or stunned by his target or companions, or is ditched by them in the end. Almost immediately I believe this sort of program to contain very sexist messages towards both men and women. For men, it shows that its normal to lust after young beautiful women and treat them as nothing but sexual objects that you can try and win over. Then, theres also the problem that the main character is promoting unrealistic standards for young boys. Adults or older viewers may see this as a joke made by the creators however I believe young children may comprehend this differently, they may believe this is the proper way to act. Steven Universe Finally, we have Steven Universe. it premiered on November 4, 2013 as Cartoon Networks first animated series to be solely created by a woman, Rebecca Sugar. I think the fact Rebecca Sugar is the first woman to create an animated series says a lot about the show because we can see that a woman is writing women which will lead to more accurate women characters. It is the coming-of-age story of a young boy named Steven Universe, who lives in the fictional town of Beach City with the Crystal Gems Pearl, Garnet, and Amethyst, three magical humanoid aliens. Steven, who is half-Gem, goes on adventures with his friends and helps the Gems protect the world from their own kind[2](Wikipedia, 2017). I decided to watch Steven Universe instead of other popular CN television shows, for example Adventure Time or We Bare Bears because its very different from your usual cartoon. What I mean by that is we have four main characters, three of them are women who sport different body shapes which shows great body representation for women and theres even one character who is coded black, which means that outside of the shows context, she is seen is a black woman[3]. When watching some of the episodes for the show, I expected to see a lot of good representation for both genders and minorities too. I didnt expect to see any themes or characters that were LGBT, but if there were, Id expect them to be secondary characters or not that important at all. However, I was proved wrong and the show surpassed what I expected. Well start with the very first episode of Steven Universe, Laser Light Canon. Not even a minute into the episode and 3 out of the 6 characters weve seen are plus size which is very surprising as you dont normally have that many characters that arent just slim or curvy in childrens television shows. Two minutes in and we meet the crystal gems; Garnet, Amethyst and Pearl. We see these characters fighting against corrupted beings, not even breaking a sweat. The first impression we have of these women is that they are powerful and that they dont conform to the norm. Amethyst is very relaxed, she lassos the monster and calmly says, Sup Steven? while doing a peace sign. From this we can see that shes the laid back one of the group, she doesnt take things too seriously and she likes to have fun with what she does. One thing to note is that Amethyst is plus sized, a very deliberate characteristic the story boarders have given her. In media, overweight characters (mostly girls) are virtually absent.[4] In the Prix Jeunesse study for childrens television in the UK, 431 (63.7%) of the sample were of average weight, 192 (27.4%) of the characters were very thin, and 55 (8.9%) very overweight. 63.7% of all characters represented in British childrens TV are of a normal body range. Females are more often thin, males more often overweight. Out of the female characters 159 (55.2%) are in the normal range, 112 (38.9%) are very thin and 17 (5.9%) are very overweight. 272 male characters (69.9%) are in the normal range, 79 (20.3%) are very thin and 38 (9.8%) are very overweight. [5] This shows that the cartoon is obviously aiming for representation of larger characters and so far, this is good representation. The next character Pearl is then seen, she moves carefully and her strikes are precise as a melodic tune from a piano plays in the background. From this small part we can see that Pearl lives up to her gemstone symbolism; shes pure and innocent. Disney  Movies: Disney and Pixar For this part of my report, I would like to refer to the studios Disney and Pixar both as Disney. It is my understanding that they are different but fundamentally they stem from the same studio. Mulan The first film we have from Disney is the 1998 classic, Mulan. This film is heavily praised and noted for being a feminist film but why is that? What makes Mulan feminist? The basic plot of the film is that Mulan takes the place of her father in the war as she is concerned about her health. Mulan tackles the idea of how gender roles are worthless and that anybody can do anything as long as you have the right attitude however some may argue against this. After her male disguise fails and she is banished, Mulan doesnt give up and instead saves the whole of China and winning the heart of her once captain, Shang. One of the problems that have arisen already is the use of gender identity and what makes you a man or a woman. Mulan plays with the idea that to be a man you must à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦be swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon which are lyrics from the song, Ill make a man out of you. This is a problem as it reinforces the idea that you should be a man but what does it mean to be a man? This is giving young children, young boys in particular, a very obscured impression of what men are; that they should be powerful and forceful. This also links to the idea that men are praised for taking charge and women are brandished as bossy[6] (see figure 1) and commanding. In addition, the opening song, honour to us all includes the lyrics, men want girls with good taste, (who are) calm (and) obedient and who work fast-paced, with good breeding and a tiny waist. This is obviously sexist and demonstrates that in the past women were seen as nothing more than objects for men to a dmire. A further problem with gender identity in the film Mulan is that it could be regarded as transphobic as its ideas of what it means to be a man or woman only reference the physical aspects, for example the way we look or the way we talk which can be seen when Mulan cuts off her hair and uses a deep tone when pretending to be Ping who is her male alter ego. The film does not reference the mental aspects of gender and could possibly offend a minority of people. However, some argue that Mulan isnt transphobic in the slightest, its just all about gender performance, much like drag in real life. In the Feminist and Queer Analysis of Disneys Mulan by Juliane Fung they suggest that using the queer theorys idea of gender performativity, it can instead be argued that Mulan is a film about gender performance and not gender itself. The film is supported by Butlers idea that gender is not an inherent set of traits, but rather it is performed (Ott and Mack 2009).[7] Furthermore, the film explores the pressure that is put on young women and how the anxieties can affect the. In the song, Reflection Mulan considers about her roles she has. She claims that she will never pass for a perfect bride, or a perfect daughter which shows the unrealistic demands that she was asked of. Mulan also hopes that she can free (herself) from their expectations which also demonstrates that women are In conclusion, many would argue that Mulan executes feminism ideals very well and that the theme of women empowerment is the most prominent in the whole film while others would disagree and claim that the film portrays the belief that men are in fact superior to women and that feminine traits will always be subordinate to those of the superior male class, as explained in Juliane Fungs analysis.[8] Throughout the whole movie, the emphasis is on gender roles, not Mulans aim to save China or her fathers life. Moreover, I believe that no gender here is represented in a more positive way than negative. Its very obvious that Mulan reinforces gender stereotypes with males being strong leaders and females serving no other purpose than looking after their husbands and being beautiful. Something I felt was completely unnecessary was giving Mulan the love interest too, this film was supposed to show Mulan being strong and independent and break free of the stereotype that women should be wives a nd dedicate their life to domestic life so I felt having Mulan and Shang share a romantic relationship completely went against the films intended message. The Princess and the Frog The second film we have from Disney is The Princess and The Frog which is the modernised version of the Brothers Grimms The frog king. This film excited many people as it was the first Disney film to have an African American lead role who was female. It also strays away from the typical damsel in distress trope that Disney have frequently used in the past. Tiana is a hardworking woman from New Orleans from 1930s America. She works two jobs to try and fund her dreams of owning a restaurant but due to discrimination she is left without the chance to buy an empty property. Her friend Charlotte is the daughter of the mayor, shes rich and beautiful yet her and Tiana have a very honest and open relationship. This is really refreshing to see as you would expect Charlotte and Tiana to have a very unfortunate relationship however they work really well together. One problem however is that there are the stereotypes of the smart brunette and the dumb/helpless blonde. (Gà ¶tz, 2006). Tiana is a headstrong character while Charlotte is constantly obsessed with marrying princess and being a princess herself, many would argue that she is a very one-dimensional character as she has no other tropes other than the one previously mentioned. As I previously mentioned, Tiana was the first female African American lead of a Disney movie so a lot of people would be excited to see what role she would take on and how she would be represented. A positive of Tianas character is that she shows that its important to work hard for what you want and that you should always follow your head. Her happily ever after isnt that she is married to a prince, although that does happen, it is more about the fact she finally has her restaurant after working hard for so many years. Its very inspiring to see that Tiana finally reaches her goal after all of the hardships she faced but there are many problems attached to this as well. One problem that I have found is the fact that Disney likes to include love interests when theyre clearly not needed. By showcasing male-female romantic love as something out of the ordinary, special and magical childrens films further the notion of heterosexuality normative. (Kazyak and Martin, 2009) Furthermore, it seems at the end of the film that Tiana was only able to purchase the restaurant she wanted because of Naveens money and his status as a prince. Its understandable that this is more realistic as his privilege would have helped Tiana in the 30s but what sort of message does it promote to young women? That you have to rely on a man to reach your goals? In my opinion this is bad representation as it is showing that women cannot be independent in the long run. Another problem that could be argued is that even though Disney made a huge breakthrough with their first African American lead, Tiana spends the majority of the film as an amphibian. Obviously, she has to be so the film can be progressed but what does it say if we hardly have any moments with a humanised Tiana? It could be claimed that because of the way Disney gave human Tiana hardly any screen time they didnt want a woman of colour to be the main lead and that is understandable. However, on many pieces of merchandise Tiana is very much always presented as a human and not as the frog character we know so this could dispute that claim. On the other hand, Prince Naveen also has troubles with representation in the film. Disney have come under fire from many fans and black man who accuse Disney of erasing their identities. Stroman (1984) states that black characters on television shows are more likely to be unemployed and impoverished[9] so by making Naveen racially ambiguous, Disney have offended many people. From a blog online people have argued that this was a slap in the face of black men who are only portrayed as criminals and sidekicks and not heroes and romantic love interests.[10] In conclusion, I feel like Disney did try to represent both genders and minorities in this case well yet it didnt work. There are many problems such as the fact that the two main people of colour spend the majority of the film as amphibians and not portrayed as humans, that the female character has to rely on the male character for her dreams to come true and the forced hetero-romance between the main characters. On the other hand, there are many positives too. Tiana is overall a very inspiring character for young girls and especially little black girls. Its important for children to not only be encouraged by a character but that they can relate with them also. Tiana teaches them not to give up on your dreams even if the world is against you and thats an important life lesson for anyone. Prince Naveen is also a good role model for young boys, but mostly towards the end of the film when he has come to the end of his character arc. He goes from a penniless prince to a man who is loving and caring of his friends and family. He is concerned about his own ego at the start but changes to become more compassionate. Whats more is that Naveen loves his music and encourages others to play, something which is considered quite feminine. ETHICS AND THE COLLEGE STUDENT Essay

What is ethics? Merriam Webster’s Dictionary defines ethics as morals or principles that Govern a person’s or a group’s behaviors or the branch of knowledge that deals with moral principles. In college students face many ethical dilemmas. This paper will explain the factors that affect a student’s ethical decision making as well as the ethical decision making process. The socialization process is a major influencing factor in our ethical decision making. While we are children, we absorb behaviors and develop our morals and values. Our family is the biggest influence in developing our morals. For instance, proper use of grammar, the importance of education, and strong work ethic are all values that family members help us to develop. Negative influences such as alcohol and drug abuse, poverty, and physical abuse can also shape our behaviors and attitudes. Peer pressure is also an important factor college students face when making ethical choices. In a study done by UCLA, 52% of students said that peer pressure affected ethical choices they made (Yeung and Keup 2009). In addition, the same survey showed how students’ perceptions of peer beliefs and behaviors were the best predictors of their own ethical behavior. Under age drinking, illegal drug use, and casual sex are some dilemmas that students must make choices about when they are attending college. In a review by Harris (1916), he states that underage age drinking had all but disappeared and drug use was unheard of in the early 1900s. But in a survey  taken by UCLA students in 2009 78% of students under the age of 21 admitted to drinking alcohol and 57% of all students admitted to using some type of illegal drug at least once (Yeung and Keup, 2009). In addition these students admitted that peer  pressure was a major determining factor. This information shows that over the last decade underage drinking and drug use has increased amongst college students or they priorities have changed.   Stress also causes students to make unethical decisions. In another study done by UCLA 82% of students would â€Å"consider† plagiarizing, cheating on a test, or lying to a professor when in a stressful situation like finals, mid-terms, or whe n facing academic probation (Yeung and Keup 2009). Social media also plays an important role in college students’ ethical decision making. In the book, â€Å"Philosophy for the Masses: Ethics†, Bruce D. Bruce writes that advertising and media can deceptive and persuasive (Bruce 2009 p.200). Bruce goes on to say that sometimes the media blurs the distinct line between right and wrong and our youth/young adults are most often the ones that have difficulty seeing that line clearly (Bruce 2009 p.200). As stated previously, plagiarism is major dilemma that plagues college students. Stress, peer pressure, and social media are all factors that affect students when deciding whether or not to plagiarize. Young and Keup (2009) noticed that even though many college students thought about plagiarizing when stressed, they felt it was morally wrong. They also discovered that students would rather steal food from the dining facility or even present fake identification to enter a club rather that plagiarize. Most of the students in their study felt condemned or even guilty just thinking about the fact. Time management and the Ethical PEAS will aid students when facing ethical the ethical decision making process (Frame Work of Ethical Decision Making, para 2-3). Students should set aside time for homework, study time, and extracurricular activities. Structure makes it easier  to get things accomplished without the feeling of being rushed. Setting aside study time will give students adequate time to research so they will not feel the need to plagiarize; they will be prepared. Students should also use the Ethical PEAS (Frame Work of Ethical Decision Making, para 2-3). As described in the â€Å"Framework for Ethical Decision-Making† by Montana State University, PEAS is an acronym used when executing the ethical decision making process: P – What is the Problem? E – What is the Evidence? A – Analyze; What guidelines or theories will help me in my process? S – What is the Solution to my problem? Some theories a student can use are (Frame Work of Ethical Decision Making, para 4): The Front Page Newspaper Test Would you be comfortable if your actions were revealed on the front page of the paper? End/Means Test Does and ethical goal (end) justify the way you get to that goal (means)? The Golden Rule Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Utilitarianism What act or rule results in the greatest good for the greatest number? Professional Standards of Conduct Follow the rules, regulations, and codes set before you. In summary, college students must make ethical decisions daily. Stress, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, the socialization process, and a person’s morals and values all play a part in this process. If students exercise the  ethical decision making process it will make this process much easier. Ethical dilemmas will never go away. So, we must understand ourselves, how a far we are willing to go, and always try to do the right thing. References Bruce, B.D. (2013). Philosophy for the Masses: Ethics. Mitigation of Earthquakes

The location of Kobe town played a great role on the magnitude of the damage caused by the earth quake that occurred in the town in 1995. The damage was far much as compared to the damage caused in the Northridge earthquake in 1994 as much as the magnitudes of the quakes were the same. Kobe town is on a narrow strip, where we have a narrow transportation corridor that was severely impaired due to the collapse of the elevated roads and railways and this caused dislocation of public and commercial traffic. There was evidence of ground failure including disruption of the road pavement, the subsiding of pavement around manholes and ejection of silt soils. The only transportation link became the ground level roads and this brought about congestion that impeded emergency response and recovery. There were large deformations in road pavements and also of the ground near buildings foundations in the district of Sannomiya of Kobe. The deformations were in the order of tens of centimeters and thi s could have been the likely cause of the damages that included tilting of the building or collapse of the entire structures that were experienced in many multistory buildings that occurred in Kobe especially in the down town area. The time of occurrence of the quake also served to increase the people who died. The quake occurred at 5:46 a. m. , the time which found many of the resident asleep or just beginning their morning routines. There were also so many old wood-frame houses with heavy clay tiles that collapsed causing many deaths. There was also the ignition of fires that followed immediately after the collapse of the structures. The fires could not be extinguished on time to avert more death because of the hindrance caused by the failure of the water supply system and the disruption in the traffic system. These did not happen in the case of the 1994 Northridge earthquake as all the fault rupture occurred at depth that were greater than 10km, and many of the multistory building s in San Fernando Valley were at least 20km away from the fault rupture that was closest (Paul, 1995).The Northridge earth quake also occurred at the time when there were no people occupying the building that were affected. These include a stadium that collapsed but there were no people in it at that early morning hours that the quake occurred. There was also the report of multi storey commercial buildings collapsing but were also not occupied during the time of collapse. In this town there was also incidence of fire eruption due to the breaking of the commercial gas pipe system, though this did not measure to what occurred at Kobe. There was also the collapse of the wood structure but the number was not as big as the one experienced at Kobe. There were few such structures in this town as compared to the large number in the Kobe case. The design aspect of the structures also averted the occurrence of more death as seen from none collapsing of school buildings which are reinforced aga inst earth quakes. Components to include in mitigation strategy a) Improve risk assessments. Risk assessment should be done to find out the chances that earth quake are likely to occur in a certain place and the frequency of such an occurrence and the severity determined.Such information should be combined with the inventory of the structures that are in existence, and are likely to be affected by such disaster accompanied by the fragility data. The fragility data estimates the degree of damage that various types of structure will experience, for example, the type of damage likely to be experienced by unreinforced masonry building which is in earthquake prone area. These risk assessments are very important in increasing public awareness about the threat posed by the natural disaster. b)Implementation of mitigation measures.Land use plan can help the communities reduce significantly on losses that are brought about by natural disasters like earth quakes by adoption of land use plans that aim at avoiding the hazards while taking care of the environment and other goals. There is however no willingness of local government to adopt land use measures to protect against hazards unless a direction is received from a higher level government. There should be accurate identification of the disaster affected areas though the mapping of the hazard zones could be very expensive for some municipalities.Earth quake disaster can also be reduced substantially by improving the building codes. The code will guide the standard of buildings that are allowed (to be built) in certain areas and the rehabilitation of already existing structures. The life safety of buildings is currently being set by building codes. The maintenance of the functionality of the structures also is a very important aspect and becomes very critical in certain class of structures. For example in the US there was establishment of seismic safety standards for federally funded new construction by the federal gov ernment. This has the mandate of addressing seismic safety standards of the buildings that are already in existence and are either owned or leased. About half of 30000 communities in US have not adapted any building code and the effectiveness of the building codes is also subject to reinforcement by the relevant authority (Science, 1999). This requires an ongoing inspection program and it has been noted that many communities lack the required number of inspectors that are required to perform the job efficiently.c) Improve technologies that support warnings and the dissemination of, and response to, warnings. A good mitigation strategy should address this issue as one of the component of the mitigation strategies. Warnings are expected to be time specific, show location of the expected disaster and the severity of the expected events. The uncertainty accompanied by the events should also be stated in the manner that will allow the taking of action to ensure the survival of people and the protection of institutions and property. There are some warnings that are developed in form of maps even before a disaster occurs in an area. These could also include the posting of signs in the areas or having a regulation that requires that real estate agents inform potential property owners the nature of disaster the area is prone to. d) Improve the basis for natural disaster insurance. Improvement of the basis of natural disaster insurance is an important component that should be included in the mitigation strategy. There should be reward for individuals that invest in hazard-reduction measures and this should be before and after the disaster. Individuals that are insured are to be awarded lower premiums for adopting mitigation measures before disasters such as the potential loses are considerably reduced. The insurance companies have the freedom of refusing to provide coverage unless the policyholder has agreed to undertake certain prospective measures that can lower the pote ntial losses. Fast Pitch Softball Is A Game - 1441 Words

Never knowing what pitch is going to come next is always an adrenaline rush while standing in the batters box. Fast pitch softball is a game that has physically and mentally changed my life for the past eleven years. It involves two teams, one who is home and the other who is away. The game consists of seven innings on a softball diamond. There is an upper half and lower half of each inning. The upper half begins with the home team on the field, consisting of nine players in the appropriate positions, and the away team at the plate batting with only nine to ten people in the roster. Offense is a major key to win a game. Making contact with the ball is probably the most difficult and frustrating thing in the world, because you just never know where the pitch is going to end up. There are many techniques to hitting, but we need to get down to the basics first. Since I was eights years old, I’ve been hitting a ball off a Tee. Sometimes it becomes repetitive and boring, but steppi ng into a live batters box is where all of that hard work comes into play. Growing up, my parents would always find someone to give me lessons or find a travel team that seemed to be a good fit for me. I was fortunate to have parents to push me to become a better athlete and support me at all of my sporting events. I’ve had several, and I mean several, batting, pitching, and fielding lessons. Comparing Beowulf, The Anglo Saxon And Beowulf s Motivations

Beowulf, the Anglo Saxon Epitome: An analysis of the Anglo Saxon code and Beowulf’s Motivations The story of Beowulf is an outstanding example of the Anglo Saxon code. But what is the Anglo Saxon code? What is a code? A code is something to live by, often an unwritten pledge and standard to live by as one resides or partakes in a team with unity. Code is defined simply as â€Å"program instructions.† For instance, if one participates in a school sport activity, such as cross country, there is an unwritten code that each participant needs to be nothing but positive, that each athlete, no matter how good or bad, contributes to the team in some way, and that each athlete gives their full effort even if it doesn’t measure up to the effort†¦show more content†¦Initially, the anglo saxon code is injected into the Beowulf epic poem in that Beowulf greets King Hrothgar with respect, therefore making Beowulf a character who displays the unwritten law of respecting elders. An example of this is shown when Beowulf enters Hrothgar’s palace and greets him, year ning to defeat Grendel, the enemy of the Danes, who the king and his soldiers cannot defeat: â€Å"Hail, Hrothgar! Higlac is my cousin and my king; the days Of my youth have been filled with glory. Now Grendel’s Name has echoed in our land: sailors Have brought us stories of Herot, the best of all mead-halls.† Beowulf is immediately respectful of his elder Hrothgar, as he basically demeans the power of Hrothgar and his community in that they need help from an outsider with great might. Beowulf is a mighty warrior and could very easily overtake Hrothgar’s throne, and though Beowulf is aware of this, he is careful to identify himself as lower class to Hrothgar because Hrothgar is a king, and Beowulf is not. This is a direct instance of the anglo saxon code being portrayed in this epic poem, the idea that the young

A Business Fraud And Cybercrime - 1511 Words

Both large and small companies require a certain amount of protection from fraudulent acts. To be naive in thinking that fraud would never occur within a company would be reckless. There are three key objectives when operating a business, whether large or small. These objectives include prevention, detection, and response, and should be implemented into every company’s operations. When exploring preventative techniques, there are seven recommendations made by professionals to reduce the most often seen attacks of small business fraud and cybercrime. Most importantly a company should protect their assets, specifically their credit cards and bank accounts. Credit cards and bank accounts are a common source of fraud and should be recognized as the most important advice to adhere to (Beesley, 2013, para. 5).Professionals recommend â€Å"separating your personal banking and credit cards from your business accounts – this will ensure fraudsters don’t get their hands on all your money. This will also make it easier to track your business expenses and report deductions on your tax return† (Beesley, 2013, para. 5). It is also recommended that credit cards are not shared with employees within the company. There are many advancements in technology that allow for reduced use of having to tote around an actual credit card, for example, bills can be paid in advance online (Beesley, 2013, para. 6).
